Ideology of the Porn Industry

Porn is one of the most ancient businesses in history. Men and women have always been simultaneously fascinated and disgusted by sex. Once seen as a taboo, sex had the alluring appeal of doing or watching something that your society deemed obscene and unholy. This fascination with sex is only natural, for it is something that most of enjoy even if conservative societal laws tell us not to.

However, the porn industry promotes a distorted image of reality by creating images of hairless women and beefy, muscular men. Storey identifies this holding the interests of the powerful over the powerless as a type of ideology. Divisions are created between ideal body types and body types that are not represented in the media that are therefore seen as unattractive. This puts us in a type of social order created by the powerful pron companies who decide what is beautiful and then perpetuated by the public who buy into it.

There is a connotation or stigma that goes with the word porn. It used to be called “smut” which sounds dirty and dark. The unconscious meaning that the word porn has can be related to the feeling of doing something that your parents told you no to do. This stigma is exactly what drives the masses to purchase porn over the web and on their televisions. It is the feeling that one wants to to something that one knows is wrong, and then doing it anyway. “Were feeling like, ooh we cant have it, but its available. And what you have is a billion dollar industry”. That creates a feeling of excited curiosity is what drives people to investigate what it is all about.

In the Frontline documentary titled American Porn, they ask the question, “what is the human cost” after walking away from a woman who is making money by pretending to get raped and actually beaten and then eventually killed in an Extreme Associates film. The money is a huge factor in the porn industry, that is why you have a 19 year old girl agreeing to have sex with 6 guys in 3 hours. She is making $1,000 – $1,500 a shoot and has never seen that much money in her life. This is exactly what Storey is talking about when he discussed the interests of the powerful being held over the interests of the powerless.

Additionally I took a look at the video titled, “The Perfect Lie”, which discussed the use of the program Photoshop to retouch pictures of celebrities in magazines. Girls are finding themselves wondering why they can match themselves up to the images that they see in the magazines and that is because they simply are being shown “an impossible image of beauty”. These distorted images of reality are showing us unattainable perfection because, the women in real life don’t even look like that”.

ImageThis exploitation of women’s insecurities disgusts me. It is fueled by huge corporations that have the resources to dangle money and images in the faces of women and men across the world in order to get them to do sexual acts and buy products that they don’t need. The reason that porn and the images in magazines are so enticing are because they are not reality. If a person wanted to go our and get their face completely remodeled they would never look like the women in the magazines because those women are not real. If a person wanted to have sex like they do in extreme porn they would not be able to because in reality no one wants to be exploited like that without seeing some cash first.

Frequently we have a bad image to the porn industry because that might cause illegal occurrences. That is never wrong. But it is true that it makes sense as a business because there are a lot of customers buying it. Though any teachers in school don’t recommend their students to watch the porn videos and read the magazines, any children come to know them naturally. I think the common point of the porn stuff and the magazines are what people want to do (like the extreme plays in videos) and want to be (like celebrities in photos) but it is impossible.

Nice way to tie the Storey article with the porn industry. You mention the powerful holding interest over the powerless when it comes to encouraging women to do sex acts they normally wouldn’t. But do think this is exploitation since these women are getting paid?

  4. I completely agree with the statement you made : “This exploitation of women’s insecurities disgusts me. It is fueled by huge corporations that have the resources to dangle money and images in the faces of women and men across the world in order to get them to do sexual acts and buy products that they don’t need.” The porn industry is no doubt patriarchal, and therefore men control this exploitation of women and their insecurities. In my opinion, the porn industry really objectifies women. This is definitely “a systematic body of ideas matriculated by a particular group of people” and that particular group of people is dominated by men.
